'More on Konark'.........KJS Chatrath

A sketch of the Sun Temple by James Ferguson, 1837. The fragment of the sanctuary existing then is visible. Archeological Survey of India mentions that 'curiously enough, the first suggestion for the conservation of the Sun Temple at Konark came not from the conservationists but from the Marine Board way back in 1806. The move for repairs arose out of a purely utilitarian motive, as the temple, called the Black Pagoda by European mariners, served as a landmark on the shallow coast of Orissa'.
