'Bacchus in Louvre Museum, Paris, France' - by K J S Chatrath

Image
This marble statue of Bacchus, the Greco-Roman God of wine and ecstasy, caught my eye when I visited Louvre last fortnight. This statue was part of the collection of antiquities assembled by Cardinal Richelieu (1585-1642) for his chateau near Tours. In the 18 th century it was brought into the Parisian townhouse of the Cardinal’s descendants. After the French Revolution Alexandre Lenoir (1761-1839) found the work in pieces, had it restored, and entrusted it to the Louvre ina79t. The arms and legs are, for most part, modern.
