The
tresses of 16-year-old Nilanshi Patel (India, b. 16 August 2002) had
achieved a length of 1.75 m (5 ft 8 in) by 21 November 2018. She has
been growing her hair since the age of six, and calls it her "lucky
charm". It is washed once a week – drying takes half an hour, combing
twice that. Nilanshi usually wears her hair in a braid, but ties it in a
bun to play table tennis.
The
world's longest documented hair belongs to Xie Qiuping (China) at
5.627m (18 feet 5.54 in) when measured on 8 May 2004. She has been
growing her hair since 1973 from the age of 13. "It's no trouble at all.
I'm used to it," said Xie Qiuping. "But you need patience and you need
to hold yourself straight when you have hair like this."
After earning the
world record for longest dreads in 2009, Asha Mandela had her hair
measured again. Now, it reaches an impressive 110 feet. Maintaining the
hair isn’t easy for Mandela. Washing and cleaning it requires a bathtub,
and it weighs an estimated 25 to 30 pounds.
The Mbalantu women of Namibia were in the
1900s well-known for their incredibly long, braided hair.A woman had to wear this style for several years after marriage but
should change it to mirror a new status, such as the birth of a child.
These unique Eembuvi braids re-emerged in the 90’s as Box Braids and
have since become an inspiration for many people across the world, even though
they are not as long and thick as the Mbalantus.
