'Some photos from Halebidu (12th century AD), Karnataka, India, Part-II' by K J S Chatrath

 Halebidu or Halebid is 210 kms kms from Bengaluru in Karanataka, India. It is 27 km away from the nearest big town- Hassan. It has magnificently carved temples Hoysalesvara and Shantalesvara. The temples at Halebidu have beautifully engraved walls. The temple complex depicts stories from Mahabharata, Ramayana and Puranas and were built in the 12th century AD. Hoysalesvara is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Shantalesvara to Lord Shantaleswara.

Halebidu literally means the old city. In the ancient times, Halebidu was known as Dwarasamudra, which means the gateway to the seas in Hassan district. It flourished as the capital of Hoysala kingdom for 150 years.

I visited Halebidu in 2014 and am planning to go there again this December. Here are some of the photos that I took in 2014:
