'Some artifacts in the National Museum of Indonesia' - shared by K J S Chatrath

 

                                                       National Museum of Indonesia, Jakarta.

I visited the National Museum Indonesia at Jakarta in December 2015. It is an extremely rich museum showing deep Indian influence on the culture of Indonesia. 

 

                                                                     Manjusri Sikhadara

Central Java, early 10th century. This statue depicts young Bodhisatva Mnjusri who would put his power over the future. His right handis in the posture of Waramudra which means endowment. His left hand holds a flower of blue lotus (utpala) with a book on top symbolizing enlightenment.

 

                      Porcelin dish found in South East Sulawesi; Japan, Arita, Edo Period, 17th century.

                                               

                              Double Gourd Vase, China Ming Dynasty, 16th century, North Sumatra.

 

Necklace: Gold, diamonds, rubies; Klungkung, Bali. The Dutch looted the regalia of the Klungkung kingdom during the Puputan War in 1908.

Adu Statue, Nias, North Sumatera, material wood. The Nias people are traditionally animists, worshipping their ancestors as part of their religious practices. When a person dies, an Adu statue will be created to resemble the deceased. This statue maintains the relationship between the dead and the descendents. A small Adu statue is placd in front of the house of the deceased.

I was in Odisha from 1968 to 2003, excepting the years that I was posted in Delhi/Shimla etc. Right from day one I had been fascinated by the existence of detailed record of Jagannath Puri temple and the Kings.   Unfortunately I could not get to visit the chambers in Puri where it is kept, much less to read it. What was also a major handicap was that my proficiency of reading hand written Odia script was very poor. And the years passed by. There came a spark in between which could have rekindled my interest in Madala Panji. One of my senior colleagues told me that his daughter was applying for a scholarship/fellowship to a German University to do research on Madala Panji.
