'Scotland’s Madras College' - by K J S Chatrath

Image
Madras College at St. Andrews in Scotland was founded in 1832 Visiting St Andrews, near Edinburgh in Scotland, a few years back, I suddenly came face to face with a board on which the words "Madras College" were written. A memorial plaque nearby gave some details about this institution, its founder and the Madras connection. Reverend Dr Andrew Bell (1753-1853) was the founder of Madras College at St Andrews. Born in St. Andrews, he was a priest and an educationist. In February 1787, he came to Madras, where he stayed for 10 years. He became chaplain to a number of British regiments and gave a course of lectures. While serving in Madras, he developed a form of schooling where the older pupils taught the younger ones . He claimed to have seen some local children in Madras teaching others alphabets by drawing in

'News & views' - by K J S Chatrath

Image
There is a news item in today's newspapers that a chain of Gurudwaras in Gurugram have offered Muslims to do their Namaz in side the Gurudwara premises/ halls.    This reminds me of an incident, which one of my lady friends, a Hindu, told me a few weeks back. She mentioned that when she was a kid, the family would sometimes travel by train in UP - mother and kids. The mother would always peep into various compartments before choosing one to board.    The kids, curious as they are by nature, asked the mother what she was looking for. She told them that she was looking to see if there was a Sikh travelling by the same train and would prefer to travel in that bogie. If there is a Sikh travelling in the same bogie then no harm would come to us and in case of any problem, he would help us, explained the mother.    India is a proudly secular country where adherents of all faiths live in perfect harmony.  Let us keep it that way.

'A sweet and sour visit to St. Petersburg, Russia, Part-I' - by K J S Chatrath

Image
St. Petersburg is a Russian port city on the Baltic Sea. It was the imperial capital for 2 centuries, having been founded in 1703 by Peter the Great, subject of the city's iconic “Bronze Horseman” statue. It remains Russia's cultural center, with venues such as the Mariinsky Theatre hosting opera and ballet, and the State Russian Museum showcasing Russian art, from Orthodox icon paintings to Kandinsky works. I spent three days there in 2011. I had gone there to join an internation travel group to undertake the Siberian Rail Journey. The first day in the town was wonderful. I was overwhelmed by its various sights. The next two days were sour. My passport got stolen. I could not join the Siberian Rail journey without my passport. Next two traumatic days were spent in going to the police station to lodge a report of thee theft and theen to go to the Indian Consulate for getting a travel document to return to India. No, it did not send there. The last day was spen
