'Treat ladies with dignity' - by K J S Chatrath

Image
Is beach Handball, one of the Games in the Olympics, a game of skill or a sport to encourage voyeurism?  The blatantly sexist rules of  International Handball Federation require women to wear bikini bottoms “with a close fit and cut on an upward angle toward the top of the leg.” The sides of the bikini bottoms must be no more than four inches. Men, on the other hand, can wear shorts as long as four inches above their knees as long as they are “not too baggy.” Bikinis are the traditional outfits of beach handball. The form fitting uniform is said to allow increased mobility and less likely to trap sand.  Earlier this year Norway’s beach handball players were each fined 150 euros for wearing shorts rather than the required bikini bottoms. A spokeswoman for the International Handball Federation said she didn’t know the reason for the rule!  Ladies team from Norway in the uniform which they prefer- tight fitting shorts instead of revealing bikini bottoms.  Ladies must be treated

'Faux pas' in Casablanca, Morocco. ....by K J S Chatrath

Image
Let me start with a little joke: Wife: I have made a 'faux pas' today.  Husband: How many times have I told you that I do not like French food! Now on to the 'faux pas' that I made. I was in Casablanca, Morocco and saw a colourful car parked on the side of the road. I stopped a passer by and requested him to take my photo with my arm resting on the car. He took the above photo. It was much later when I looked at the photo in the evening that I realised that what I took for a smart colourful car was an ambulance!😀

'Respectful homage to Sweeper Chunni of WWI lying commemorated in Merrut Military Cemetry, France' - by K J S Chatrath

Image
In October 2016 I went to a small town named St. Martin Les Boulogne in north of France to visit 'Meerut Military Cemetery' where 312 Indian soldiers & non-combatants lie resting since the last 100 years. They sacrificed their lives in defending France during the World War I. Incidentally Meerut and Lahore Divisions were the first units of Indian army that reached France in Seprtember 1914. Indicative location of Boulogne in the map of France. I paid my respectful homage to all these braves. I had taken paper marigold flowers from India. I put one on each commemorative stone. This stone remembers martyr Chunni whose designation was Sweeper, Army Serial No. 75 in the Indian army. He was a non-combatant not carrying any arms and obviously had died in the war as defenceless fodder. He belonged to the Army Hospital Corps,  Secunderabad General Hospital in India and died on 29th November 1914, that is within two months of arrival in France.

The formal foundation ceremony for the fort was held on 17 February 1589 and the fort was completed on 17 January 1594. Interiors were added and embellished later on. Signs of Jauhar? 'Respectful homage to Lt. (Dr.) Pandit Piaray Lal Atal - an unsung hero of WW-I' - by K J S Chatrath

Image
Late Lieut. (Dr.) Pandit Piaray Lal Atal. World War -I was really a European war. India got sucked into it being under British colonial rule. Between August 1914 and December 1919, India had sent overseas 1,096,013 (Indian) men, including 621,224 soldiers, both officers and other ranks, and 474,789 non-combatants. Many of them died in foreign lands.  These are at best approximate figures.  Though Commonwealth War Graves Commission , to which India contributes for the upkeep of WW-I and WW-II cemeteries the world over, does a good job, there were many who have been forgotten even in the countries of their origin. While a good deal of research has gone into the Indian combatants of the WW_I, very little has been documented systematically about non-combatant, unarmed Indians who died during WW-I and whose are commemorated in various erstwhile theaters of War.    This is a brief presentation on one such brave Indian who died in France during WW-I.  He was Lieut. (Dr.)   Pa
