'Respectful salute to graceful & pretty lady cops from around the world' - by K J S Chatrath

When one thinks of a policeman what comes to imagination is a six footer hulk of a man , with a menacing look and, at times, lush mushes. How wrong can one get in not thinking about lady cops who may  be looking much gentler and sometimes even be smiling.

I would mention about two of the prettiest lady cops that I have seen during my trips around the world. No disrespect is meant to the other charming ladies in the police forces around the world, but these are the two whom I remember.

I have never understood why was New York chosen  as the Headquarters of UNO instead of a country with less agressive and more friendly security procedures. A country- say like Switzerland? Anyway, here was I in the UN Headquarters after having gained entry as a visitor after various checks. And there she was. The first person I saw inside the gate was a lady cop with UN's insignia blue beret. I almost froze. She was not very tall, nor was she very slim but it was her face and no-nonsense looks that attracted me to take a second look at her. My guess is that she was from one of the Balkan countries. I didn't even dream of daring to take a photo lest I be declared a suspicious person. 

The second, and even more charming lady cop I saw was at Nice in France. It was the Day of the Music that the French celebrate every year. World Music Day or Fête de la Musique is an annual celebration that takes place on June 21 to honour amateur and professional musicians alike.

There were free musical performances going on in different parks with thousands of people attending. 

At one stage I had to cross a busy road to go the park on the other side. There was lot of fast moving automobile traffic and the traffic lights had been switched off. Suddenly I saw a French lady cop appearing almost from nowhere and went and stood in the middle of the zebra crossing - putting her hands on her waist as if daring any one to break the rule. The car traffic froze and she waved the pedestrians to cross the road. 

And there I was so charmed by the lady that I kept standing and in the meantime the lady cop signalled the auto traffic to start moving. This happened two more times and I refused to cross the road so charmed was I of the lady. And then I noticed that she was looking at me with a quizzical look.. It was enough to frighten me and when the next turn to cross the pedestrian traffic came I was the first one to cross, not even having the courage to take a last look at that exceptionally beautiful and conscientious lady police officer. Sadly again, I did not take any photo.

Arthuna- a cluster of gems waiting to be 'discovered' - by K J S Chatrath

  I was lucky to have visited Arthuna, located in Banswada district of Rajasthan early this week. I took a train up to Ratlam and from there Arthuna by excellent road is about 130 kms. The place is a gem for archaeology lovers waiting to be visited and written about.I am grateful to my facebook friend and a remarkable traveller and blogger Mr. Sabya Sachi Ghosh for getting me interested in visiting Arthuna. I look forward to soon meeting Mr. Ghosh in person.  Previously known as   Utthunaka, Arthuna was the capital of Paramara rulers of Vagada during eleventh-twelfth centuries A.D. They patronized both Jainism and Saivism simultaneously, so they constructed a number of Siva temples.   According to Hobson-Jobson: The Definitive Glossary of British India , the word ‘ āchār’ finds a mention in CE 1563, in works by Garcia da Orta, a Portuguese physician, describing a conserve of cashew with salt which he refers to as ‘and this they call Āchār.’ In his book A Historical Dictionary of Indian Food , the late food historian KT Achaya notes that pickles fall into the category of ‘cooking without fire’; however, many pickles today do use heating or fire to some extent during preparation. Pickles in India have a rich legacy, which is clear when the historian further adds that a ‘Kannada work of CE 1594, the Lingapurana of Gurulinga Desika describes no less than fifty kinds of pickles’! Another later mention is found in the 17th-century Śivatattvaratnākara , an encyclopedia of ancient Indian lore of Basavarāja, King of Keladi.
