'89th Punjabis in France dring World War-I' - by K J S Chatrath

 

 

 Gallantry Award recipients of 89th Punjabis with Lt Col NM Geoghegan, DSO, Nowshera, 1917.

The 89th Punjabis was an infantry regiment of the British Indian Army  raised in 1798 as a battalion of Madras Native Infantry. It was designated as the 89th Punjabis in 1903.

 They were involved in the trench warfare in France from May to December 1915 during WW-I. 

 

These are a dozen of hundreds of Indian martyrs who belonged to 89th Punjabis and died during WW-I:

1.     Badripershad Tiwari: Sepoy; Service number 2308; Husband of Rajdeo, of Maharanpur Barabanki, U.P.; Date of death 24.11.1915 . Cemetery/memorial reference: St. Venant Communal Cemetery, France; Plot number II. G. 7.

2.     Rahmat Ali,  Sepoy; Service Number 2471; Date of death 26.10.1915; Brother of Barkat Ali, of Fattu Chak, Dhilwan, Kapurthala State. Lying commemorated in Rue-David Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix, France in plot number  Indian. A. 7.

3.     Kala Khan; Designation Sepoy; Service number 1523;  20.04.1915; lying commemorated in Meerut Military Cemetery, St. Martin-Les-B-Boulogne, France. Plot no. I. C 62.

4.     Jaskaran Singh;  Designation Sepoy;Service number  1323; Died on  05.02.1915; Son of Kamghulam Singh, of Ajgara, Azamgarh, United Provinces. Commemorateed in Zehrensdorf Indian Cemetery; Germany.  Plot Number B. 3. 64.

5.     Ramdhari Singh Thakur; Follower; Service number 2393; Died on 24.07.1916; Commemorated in  Zehrensdorf Indian Cemetery , Germany; Plot number  N. 5. 504.

6.     Bhan Singh; Havildar; Died on  5.9.1915; lying commemorated in Zelobes Indian cemetery, Lacouture, France. He was  son of Har Kaur of Lakhane, Nadddala, Plath, Kapurthala, Punjab.

 7. Girdharilal Tiwari; Sepoy , Died on 19.6.1915; He was son of Ramanand Tiwari of Bhatia, Hardargarh, Bara Banki,United Provinces; Commemorated in Neuve Chapelle Memorial, France.  

 8.     Thakur Singh; Follower; Died on  7.9.1915. Commeemorated in  Zehrensdorf  Indian Cemetery, Germany; He was won of Seogobind Singh of Narayanpur Ballia, United Provinces.

9.     Thakur Singh;  Follower; Died on  8.9.1915; Merville Communal Cemetery; Husband of Sitwatiya (Sitawati?) of Garaya, Resto, Ballia, United Provinces.

10.  Ramanandan Kunwar; Sepoy; Died on  24.7.1916; Commemorated in  Neuve Chapelle Memorial. He was  son of Subhlayak Kunwar of Beur, Bansdih, Ballia, United Provinces.

11.  Ramparbesh Kunwar; Sepoy;  Died on 29.11.1916. Commemorated in  Zehrensdorf Indian cemetery , Germany. He was son of Abherag Kunwar of Beur, Bansdih, Ballia, United Proinces.

12.  Ramparbesh Kunwar; Sepoy; 29.11.1916; Zeh…Cem Son of Abherqg Kunwar of Beur, Bansidh, Ballia, United Provinces.
