Columbus monument in Genoa was erected in 1862 after the death of the author-sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini. Columbus stands on a pedestal where are seated statues, representing Piety, Science, Constancy and Prudence. Four bass-reliefs are between them: Columbus before the Council of Salamanca. Columbus erecting a cross on the first land discovered. Reception of Columbus at Barcelona, by the Kings of Spain on his return from the first voyage. Columbus in chains, returning to Spain. The pathetic inscription is located in the center of the pedestal: A Cristoforo Columbo La Patria ("to Christopher Columbus, the Fatherland").
