'The Monumental Cemetery of Turin' - by K J S Chatrath

Image
I visited this cemetery in 2018. The Monumental Cemetery of Turin - formerly known as General Cemetery - is the largest cemetery in the city of Turin and one of the first in Italy for the number of deceased.  In 1827 the mayor of Turin was the Marquis Tancredi Falletti of Barolo. He contributed to the project of the Monumental Cemetery with a large donation. The project was approved in the area called the "Half Moons" , the name of the beautiful park that stood there until 1706. The park was destroyed by French troops besieging Turin when they put their camp. The Monumental Cemetery of Turin was officially opened in November 1829 . Today it occupies an area of 600.000m/2 . The Cemetery is an open air museum. The "City of Silence" is home to celebrities and numerous works of art , such as Bistolfi, Calandra, Canonica, Fumagalli, Rubino and so on. Writers, statesmen, historians, politicians, artists, footballers, heroes are numerous characters who have traced

'Tiled roofs of Torino, Italy' - by KJS Chatrath

Image
I visited Torino sometime back. It is known for its rich architectural heritage, is home to a variety of roof styles that contribute to its skyline. The city's historical buildings often feature the iconic red terracotta tiles that are synonymous with Italian architecture. These tiles not only provide aesthetic appeal but also offer durability and resistance to the elements, a testament to the craftsmanship of Italian builders.  When discussing the roofs of Italy, it's important to note the linguistic nuances. The Italian word for 'roof' is 'tetto,' and 'ceilings' are referred to as 'soffitto.' Mispronunciation can lead to misunderstandings, highlighting the cultural importance of language in the context of architecture and construction.  Preserving the historical tiled roofs in Torino is crucial, as they are part of the city's cultural identity. Restoration efforts, such as those seen in the Palazzo Te in Mantova, Lombardy, underscore t

'Turin Monument of Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour' - by KJS Chatrath

Image
While visiting Torino or Turin, I went to see this beauriful monument. Monument of Camillo Benso, Turin Monument of Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour (Monumento a Camillo Benso conte di Cavour) is a beautiful and detailed monument on one of the central squares of Turin. This installation of one of the leaders of Risorgimento deserves attention. Moreover, one way or another, you will stumble upon it, visiting the palaces and museums of the city center.   The monument is dedicated to the statesman of the 19th century, Count of Cavour. Becoming a politician, he had already actively supported the war for independence with Austria from 1847. After gaining independence of Italy, he became the first Prime Minister of the country. But soon fell ill with malaria and died suddenly in 1861.   Within two days, the collection of funds for the construction of the politician’s monument began. The count earned such a reputation that by the end of the year there was simply an unthinkable amount
