'Indians love chillies' - by K J S Chatrath

Image
Yes, we Indians love chillies. It is believed that Portuguese introduced chillies in India. If that be so, then we must thank the Portuguese for making our food tasty and fiery. This photo was taken in 2014 in the Indian city of Jabalpur, in the State of Madhya Pradesh.

'A modest eating place in Cachi in Salta Province of Argentina' - by K.J.S.Chatrath

Image
I had a great trip to Cachi from Salta by bus two years back when I visited Argentina. Cachi is a small town in the Calchaquí Valley of northwestern Argentina, known for its adobe houses and white colonial buildings. At its center is the Iglesia San José, a Spanish colonial church. The nearby Museo Arqueológico de Cachi Pío Pablo Díaz is a museum of locally excavated artifacts, some dating back 10,000 years. To the northwest are the snow-capped Nevado de Cachi mountains, which can be seen from town. I would bring up a photo article on Cachi separately as this one is about the lunch that we had there. The map above would give a general idea of the location of Cachi and Salta in Argentina. Cachi is about 162 kms south west of Salta. Our Group was taken to the outskirts of the town where we were dropped in front of this eating place. The place was spotlessly clean and since it was a bit early for lunch, we were the only guests and hence the service too was prompt, punctu...

'Valparaiso, Chile' - by K J S Chatrath

Image
Valparaíso is a major city, seaport, naval base and educational centre in the commune of Valparaíso, Chile. It is located about 120 kilometres (75 mi) northwest of Santiago by road. This town is home to Latin America’s oldest stock exchange, the continent's first volunteer fire department, Chile's first public library, and the oldest Spanish language newspaper in continuous publication in the world, El Mercurio de Valparaiso. In 2003, the historic quarter of Valparaíso was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. The second half of the twentieth century was unfavorable to Valparaíso, as many wealthy families abandoned the city. The opening of the Panama Canal and reduction in ship traffic dealt a serious blow to Valparaíso's port-based economy. Subsequently the city reached a recovery, attracting artists and cultural entrepreneurs who have set up in the city's hillside historic districts. Today, many thousands of tourists visit Valparaíso from ...

'Respectful salute to ladies in the Cabinet of Finland' - by K J S Chatrath

Image
It happened in December 2019 but sadly did not get the importance in the media that it deserved. Finland’s new Prime Minister then took office, leading a coalition government in which all five party leaders are ladies. At 34, Ms. Sanna Marin is the world’s youngest head of state and three of her other coalition leaders are also younger than 35. Twelve of the nineteen new Finnish cabinet members are ladies, meaning Finland’s government has the second highest percentage of lady ministers in the world, after Spain. Finland's Prime Minister Sanna Marin, Minister of Education Li Andersson, Minister of Finance Katri Kulmuni and Minister of Interior Maria Ohisalo pose after the first meeting of the new government in Helsinki, Finland December 10, 2019. (Photo source: REUTERS/Lehtikuva Lehtikuva) Location of Finland in world map. Now a few words about Finland. GDP Per Capita of Finland is USD 50,152 (2018) as against India’s 2018 per capita GDP of USD 2009. Population of F...

'Charming Plaza De Armas, Santiago De Chile' - by K J S Chatrath

Image
Santiago also known as Santiago de Chile, is the capital and largest city of Chile. It is the center of Chile's most densely populated region, the Santiago Metropolitan Region area. Founded in 1541 by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia, Santiago has been the capital city of Chile since colonial times. The city has a downtown core of 19th-century neoclassical architecture and winding side-streets, dotted by art deco, neo-gothic, and other styles. I have hadd the good fortune of visiting this city four times and would love to go there again. Plaza de Armas is the main square of Santiago, the capital of Chile. It is the centerpiece of the initial layout of Santiago, which has a square grid-pattern. This urban design was accomplished by Pedro de Gamboa, which was appointed by Pedro de Valdivia in 1541. Surrounding the square are some historic buildings, including the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago, Central Post Office Building, Palacio de la Real Audencia de Santiago, ...
