'Argentina in the news' - by K J S Chatrath

Image
Casa Rosada or the Pink House and Argentina's national flag in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Dominating the Plaza de Mayo, this emblematic pink governmental palace is the seat of the Argentine national government and houses the President's office. I find Argentina very fascinating and have been there thrice and am hoping to go once again if I live to see the global scourge of Covid coming under control. Today's newspaper has three news items relating to Argentina that have caught my attention. First is the news about legalising of abortion by Argentina. The second news relates to the iconic Lionel Messi. It writes how Messi watched from the stands as Barcelona held by Eibar, since he could not play because of his ankle problem. Here we share a photo of Messi with his stunning wife. The third news too is about sports. It informs that Indian Women's Hockey team would be touring Argentina in January 2121. A core group of 25 players and 7 supporting staff will leave...

'Reverse Clock atop Bolivia's Parliament building' - by K.J.S.Chatrath

Image
I visited Bolivia including its administrative capital- La Paz in 2014 and fell in love with the country and the city. Here one sees tradition and modernity side by side. La Paz, in Bolivia, is the highest administrative capital in the world, located in the Andes’ Altiplano plateau at 3,640m or about 12,000 feet above sea level. It stretches to El Alto city in the highlands, with snow-capped, 6,438m-high Mt. Illimani as its backdrop. The city's dramatic setting can be taken in during rides on Mi Teleférico, the aerial cable car system which the Bolivians pride in. The Plaza Murillo is the central plaza of La Paz and the open space most connected to the political life of Bolivia. Prominent buildings on the plaza include the Presidential Palace, National Congress of Bolivia, and the Cathedral of La Paz. It is located in the old town, or Casco Viejo, of the city. 3 This Plaza was originally named the Plaza Mayor (Greatest/Main Plaza) after its construction. It was Later,...

'My tastiest meal of 2019 in Chicken Gali' - by K J S Chatrath

Image
This was my tastiest meal of 2019. No, I am not making a mistake. In 2020, thanks to Covid, there was hardly any opportunity to try out food outside one's own modest kitchen. I came to know of a little chicken joint in Palika Bazar,in Connaught Place New Delhi. In the first week of December 2019, I reached Palika Bazar around 12.30 an and took entrance through Gate No. 1. Climbing down a few stairs I was there in no time. I took a turn to the left, half a dozen steps and I was in, what I would call 'Chicken Gali' or 'Chicken Street.' There aI found about half a dozen shops getting ready to serve lunch. Each one has a speciality chicken dish. I chose one which was starting and ordered a plate of chicken and two home made large tawa chappatis. A few rings of onions came as complimentary. One had to stand and juggle with the food. But it was one of the tasties chicken dishes that I have had in my life,.Mildly spicy, fresh, piping hot and very deeply cooked.Feeling s...

'Tikal, Guatemala, Central America' - by K J S Chatrath

Image
I visited Tikal in 2018. Tikal is the ruin of an ancient city, located in a rainforest in Guatemala. It is one of the largest archaeological sites and urban centers of the pre-Colombian Maya civilization. The site is part of Guatemala's Tikal National Park and in 1979 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Major construction at Tikal was already taking place in the Late Pre-classic period, first appearing around 400–300 BC, including the building of major pyramids and platforms.

'Charles Schulz, Snoopy and Christmas' - by K J S Chatrath

Image
“In 1965, Charles Schulz, a devout Christian and creator of the Peanuts comic strip, was asked to create a Christmas special for CBS featuring the Peanuts Characters. He agreed with one requirement, that they allow him to include the story of the birth of Jesus. Although the stations executives were hesitant and tried to convince him otherwise, Schulz was insistent. As a result, for the past 50 plus years, millions of people have watched and “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and heard the story of Jesus and “what Christmas is all about.”

'Santa Claus Village in Finland' by K.J.S.Chatrath

Image
I had a great visit to Santa Claus’ village in Finland some time back. But before narrating about the visit, let me first introduce Santa Claus to those who have not yet met him. It is said that the word Santa Claus has come from the Dutch language in which it means Saint Nicholas- Santa is the Dutch word for Saint and Claus for Nicholas. In Germany, he is called Weihnachtsmann, in England Father Christmas, and in France as Pere Noel. Some even say that he is in reality Santa of India's Santa-Banta fame! World map showing location of Finland. The story of Santa Claus is very simple. On the night before Christmas, he visits the homes of all of the good boys and girls and leaves them presents under the tree and fills their stockings with candy and small toys. He had paid so may visits to me and brought presents for me when I was a child that I decided to return the visit and go to his village. The first step was to find his address. I found out that Santa’s secret getaway is in ...
